A TRIBUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Good Evening, Everyone!
April 4, 2008, marked the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
There's no doubt that Dr. King is probably one of the most well respected civil rights activist in history. The choices he made and his determination to see them through; living in constant danger of physical violence to himself and those closest to him is a shinning example of a truly inspirational leader. He could have chosen to lead a comfortable existence as a baptist minister in the South and not confront the blatant injustices of racism endured by African Americans -- but God called, and he listened. He chose to engage hate and tyranny in one of its' greatest stronghold, to broadcast on the global stage that the rights and privileges guaranteed in the American Bill of Rights were constantly denied to our people simply on the basis of race. This reality contradicted everything America stood for and generations of injustices needed to be addressed. AREN'T YOU THANKFUL! I KNOW I AM!
Dr. King's sacrifices and those of countless others, both black and white, paved the way for the development of a more "equitable" society. African Americans were not the only ones who benefited from the triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. All disenfranchised segments of our society have made great strides based on the legislation generated by this movement.
Dr. King had "a dream" he sincerely believed in and was successful in translating it into tangible results for the good of all Americans. He chose to stay on the front lines in the thick of the battle and it cost him his life. Dr. King you did not die in vain. As I live, breathe, love, struggle and cry -- your legacy is real to me! Without your sacrifices and those of the people you inspired, I would not have the privileges I do today. THANK YOU!
May Peace Be With All Of You,
Sistah Selah
